To answer that question we need to explain what a bending radius is and then we have to look it up in EN 10253-2 Standard for short smooth elbows and its counterparts – German DIN 2605-1 and American ASME B16.9.
Radius is a distance from the centre of the circle to the inner axle. In the pictures we marked it as “r”. Its length is constant no matter the angle of the elbow.
Currently in Poland we apply EN 10253-2 Standard for short smooth elbows and it stipulates for each of the diameters three types of radius: type 2D, type 3D and type 5D, which counterparts of lengths presented in the table 10, 11 and 12 in EN 10253-2 Standard. The radiuses are frequently wrongly stipulated as 1D, 1.5D and 2.5D.
German Standard DIN 2605-1 also stipulates a few radius types, such as: Bauart 2, Bauart 3 and Bauart 5, which in most cases are counterparts of 2D, 3D and 5D in EN 10253-2 Standard. However, it is worth noting the difference in radiuses for diameters 21.3 and 26.9 fi.
The difference between the American Standard and the above presented is that the American one does not contain long smooth elbows. ASME B16.6 stipulates radiuses type LR, but ASME B16.28 stipulates radiuses type SR. Like in DIN it is worth noting elbows with diameters 21.3 fi and 26.9 fi – in both cases they are available only with LR radiuses, and what happens very rarely – a smaller elbow has a bigger radius.
The most important conclusion is that it is not so easy to calculate the radius, which is the most frequent mistake our customers make. Type 3D does not mean that that the radius length is three times the outer diameter.
Correct selection of the elbow radius is tantamount to placing a correct order. That is why it is worthwhile to check your goods requirements.
